Green Sunday (6/12): Primary past, General Election future, and Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) & Local Clean Energy Alliance

Green Sunday, June 12th, 5:00 – 6:30 pm

Green Sunday will have three parts:  the electoral past;  the electoral future;  and CCA & Local Clean Energy Alliance.

First we will have a collective assessment of the June 7 Primary results and their meaning for November’s General Election and beyond.

Second, we will have an opportunity to meet a new Green, Saied Karamooz, who is running for the Oakland City Council District 3 (West Oakland and Jack London Square areas).  Saied has a well worked out platform for change, including making Oakland city government more transparent and accountable.  Saied also highlights change in the way the Oakland Police operate, and has many more proposals.

Third, Megan O’Neil, activist with Local Clean Energy Alliance (LCEA), will speak about Alameda County’s current effort to replace monopoly PG&E as our primary energy source with a new community-controlled organization, similar to existing ones in Marin County and the city of Lancaster.

Community Choice energy programs allow cities, counties and some special districts to establish public programs to procure electricity for the residents and businesses in their jurisdiction as alternatives to the private for-profit utilities. LCEA envisions Community Choice as a vehicle for local, equitable, economic development by prioritizing the use of locally generated renewable energy. County supervisors have already received a positive feasibility study and are working on an agreement among our cities to implement the program this year.

We are seeking community support to ensure that Alameda County’s Community Choice program delivers maximum community benefits through local development. Barbara will help us find out what Greens can do to push for maximum community participation.
