Green Sunday Sept 11:   5:00–6:30 pm via zoom / Larry Shoup on “The Current U.S. Grand Strategy Toward China”

Dr. Laurence H. Shoup will speak on the current U.S. grand strategy toward China. He will tie together varied aspects related to this topic, including the general role of the Council on Foreign Relations (a private ruling class think tank) as well as the more specific part played by Elbridge Colby, a CFR member whose 2021 book Strategy of Denial outlines what current U.S. grand strategy toward China should be. Colby’s upper class  background and connections will be discussed along with the specifics of his book and the response to it in policy making circles. Shoup’s article on this topic appeared in the May, 2022 issue of Monthly Review magazine.

Dr. Shoup received his Ph.D in the history of American foreign policy from Northwestern University. He has taught U.S. history at a number of universities, has written five books and numerous magazine articles. His latest book is Wall Street’s Think Tank: The Council on Foreign Relations and the Empire of Neoliberal Geopolitics, 1976-2014 (2015, updated paperback edition 2019). He was a Green Party candidate for Oakland City Council in 1996 and the Green Party candidate for California Secretary of State in 2002, when he received almost 300,000 votes.
