Sixteen California Greens were elected to local government on November 5th, bringing to 18 elected overall in 2013, an all-time high for the party in an odd-numbered year – and bringing to 54 the number of California Greens currently holding public office statewide.
Led by Fairfax Town Councilmembers Renee Goddard and John Reed – who make up 2/3 of the Green Town Council majority there – nine of ten Green incumbents were re-elected, as well as 64% of all Greens who ran on November 5th (16/25) and in 2013 overall (18/28).
Among Greens elected for the first time, Sean Reagan won the most competitive race, elected Governing Boardmember to the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District in Los Angeles County, finishing 3rd/7 for four seats in a race that included four incumbents.
Among the 16 Greens elected on November 5th, two were elected to Town Councils and seven to School Boards. The most Greens elected from a single county came from Humboldt County (eight) and Marin County (four). The previous high number of California Greens elected in an odd-numbered year (where there are fewer elections than in even-numbered years) was 11 in both 2001 and 2003.
